And Reflex From Pain again, this time with a demo from 1983 featuring Ray Cappo on the vocals. Not as great as their 7" but quite enjoyable especially when you concentrate on the voice and compare it with what was coming then. Reminds me a bit of Artificial Peace, especially the flipside.
Some songs here have been played by Violent Children and 76% Uncertain later - much better of course.

TPOS was really a great label concerning some stuff from the CT and east coast area, from the Far Cry 7”, the compilation tapes or the Violent Children tape; all worth getting near your ears. They even did some 8-track cartridges lately including Violent Children, Drop Dead, Antiseen, Charles Manson and of course 76% Uncertain - all with additional stuff which has never been released before. Sounds interesting!

Funny side note: the line up features nearly all people who recorded the first Shelter album!

REFLEX FROM PAIN – black and white (7“) Bitzcore #01675 1991/ reissue

Has Reflex From Pain been posted somewhere before? I am sure the C.I.A. 7" was posted several times (why not the lp too? It is not that bad). Please tell me, but I will continue anyway:
This was originally released by Death Threat Records in 1983 but since I am a poor punk rocker (I was once told there aren’ t any1), I just have the rerelease by Bitzcore which is sadly without a lyric sheet (many Bitzcore releases – although being great – look like any Lost And Found stuff) but has additional songs which weren’ t on the original 7” (they are a bit behind the original 7" songs). I never read their lyrics so I am quite interested in someone who might provide them from the original version! Thanks.

What I always loved about the CT hardcore stuff was that they were locally caught between two, no three stools: D.C., New York and Boston. And it seems that this had quite an influence on their sound. The speed from Boston, the harshness from NY without being tough and diversity and melody from D.C.. Reflex From Pain is no exception here: great and powerful Reagan Era hardcore. 1983 was a great vintage to hardcore punk.

INTEGRITY – „in contrast of sin“ hooded sweater

Together with Snapcase and Earth Crisis the Victory band that had the most merchandise?!
They used to be an exciting band from their early demos even to “to die for”. My sister and me listened to their first album, “systems overload” and “humanity is the devil” for months when they came out; every day over and over again. The beginning of the whole holy terror hardcore and Cleveland sound was one of the last significant styles of hardcore to us. A last sign of life from this rotten piece of shit.

And Integrity spearheaded it.

Man, I loved this band for polarizing and getting a lot of stick and them constantly evolving. It seemed that every beef just made them stronger and even better in their musicianship. What ever you may think about them they were more thrilling than all those gumbos who were constantly repeating themselves.

Like all early Victory merchandise products - from Insight to Snapcase - the label had the bad habit to print the logo on every remaining bit of cotton. And while we all loved the bands but hated the label and the logo something had to happen. I can remember friends cutting of the sleeves from their hooded sweaters (dudes, looked worse than with the bulldog!). I also did funny things: in this case I was ironing the logo until I had this ugly colour blotch. Why didn’ t they just printed the nice modified Septic Death skull twice?!

Andrew Thomas Company & Medium – „strength and resistance“ shirt

Ever heard of the Andrew Thomas Company and Medium mail order? Most of you might have seen some of their famous stuff like “straight edge means I have no friends”, “vegan” with an Atari or even Sega rip off writing, "drug free stormtrooper" or the famous straight edge windbreakers. It’ s a pity that there was no distribution for their stuff in Europe. We were doing centralized buying back then; no Paypal, no credit cards just the horrible exchange rate at our local bank and then calling them in the middle of the night asking about our money.

This particular shirt was more a mocking than dead serious (it was the heydays of “firestorming”) and just fit perfectly into the roster of their other motives. The back print is oh so “Syracuse” or “Erie”.

No informations on the world wide web. That' s a pity.

YOUTH OF TODAY - bootleg shirt

Very strange bootleg from Germany and about 15 years old; there was another version in black with a white print. This might be one of the many unsightly Youth Of Today shirts, the one that came with the Lost And Found live lp and even some by Revelation, for example the “disengage” cover motive, were in the same league.

The colouring and bad quality – "nice" pose by Ray by the way – of the picture makes this some kind of a pop art accident complete by the highlight: the inclined lyrics from the last 7”.
I can still picture Pat’ s face when he was giving the shirt to me, followed by hortative words: “do you really want this?

The longer I look at it the more I’ d like to suggest this as a cover artwork for a British oi! skin compilation!

RORSCHACH - "needlepack" shirt

Another Rorschach shirt with the cover of the „needlepack“ 7“ printed in front and the famous mirroring on the back, but slightly different compared to the first Rorschach shirt post.
Thanks Xian, because this is the first one that really fits my deluxe-body.

Besides Born Against Rorschach were really the ones who dealt with dignity the heritage of Black Flag and brought it forward to a new level in a new decade.

To those who missed the vinyl releases: the “autopsy” disc on Gern Blandsten is worth every penny. By the way: I am still looking for the cover/ inlet of their demo tape!?

UNDERTOW – „european tour“ hooded sweater

Gatorade rip off design by Undertow which was designed for their European tour in 1995. Ignite and Temperance were along with them. This was also available as shirt and as long sleeve in many different colours.

They were one of the few mosh bands who played a quite heavy metal free sound and were great fun to watch live. Their stuff has just been compiled on one compact disc by Indecision Records.

Undertow are perhaps among the five best bands in this category together with a band like Slugfest. I am still thinking about the other three bands. Also make sure you check out Nineironspitfire, they were a great transformation of Undertow’ s sound towards a modern sound at the end of the 90ies.

SEEIN RED - shirt

The last Seein’ Red shirt I kept from a huge assortment I once owned; some twice due to different colours etc. Honestly I bought them because the band members were really kind – the perfect salespersons: kind and customer-oriented. Okay, they have to work on the last part: they were selling shirts in front of the venues out of plastic bags; you could even go through those bags on your own.

This shirt was done around 1996 I think. When I pull it out I am constantly repeating this “wahwahwah I am seeing red”, that was a chorus from a song by them… and one that mostly got stuck in my head at least musically…. I doat… from the split 10” with Catweazle? Damn sure it was a record with another attempt to cover Minutemen. I’ ll take a look later…

The last record I got was a split 7” with Vuur which is quite nice and I recently saw that they are still around and even released new stuff - you have to be old if you don’ t want to be wise. Besides their great early stuff (we keep silent concerning the "intifada" compilation) I really loved the split lps with Mk Ultra and The Judas Iscariot, yes, also for the Seein’ Red side of those records.

I will trade this for one of the black Lärm bootlegs which were also sold by Havoc in the 90ies (yeah, at least I tried).

Update:

It was "c-red" on the split 10" with Catweazle on Wicked Witch/ Kangaroo later rereleased by Farewell and Anomie. And they covered "party with me punker".
Catweazle also had a quite nice cd... can' t find it anymore... argh.

NAUSEA - "cybergod" shirt

I think those Nausea are way more known than the successor of Majesty. All their stuff has recently been rereleased on two double lp sets.

New York must have been a nice or maybe for me frightening place around that time since all those squatters etc. had many links to the whole Lower East Side hardcore scene; as you might know the singer of Agnostic Front used to be the boyfriend of Nausea' s singer and John John Jesse was designing record sleeves for Agnostic Front or other NY bands and labels. It' s also funny to have one song by them on the "New York Hardcore: the way it is" compilation between Youth Of Today and Y.D.L..

This shirt was done by Napo for their European tour and has the cover of the "cybergod" 7" (nice piece of plastic in my eyes; should I post it? The b-side even has one of the better anti-christianity lyrics - at least literary - within the punk community (where thousands of them were written)) on the front.

Nice remark concerning the blogger: used to wear those with white polo shirts underneath it. I was in a crew and I was the only member: the youth crust. Me you youth crust.

EXCREMENT OF WAR - shirt

Very worn Excrement Of War shirt done by Profane Existence in the beginning of the 90ies. A real nice crust band from the UK featuring members of Doom, Filthkick and Extreme Noise Terror. Their vocalist is now - together with members of Heresy, Ripcord and Spite (great but blunt singles; blunt? Makes them even greater!) - in Violent Arrest (no, that' s not a coverband of the forerunner of Abolition/Stack). I really loved their splits and the tape but haven' t heard it in a while. Just needed to preserve the piece of textile because with the next stage of the washing programme the print might be gone - just kidding. I think the "making punk a threat again" (I am not going to tell you what I think about it) was also on other PE shirts on the back, or? For example the "fight patriarchy" shirt etc.

SABETH - cobrajet (CD) Join The Team Player #05 1999 & compilation tracks

So I was sitting in front of the record player and thought about ripping the compilaton track from Sabeth on the 51 compilation LP but instead I pulled out the album first and it just knocked my socks off. I did not listen to it for about 5 years since I moved here and it is maybe one of the most underrated hardcore records from this time that I know. To complete my Sabeth postings I am including it along with the compilation tracks. The album was released on CD first and then with some delay on vinyl maybe that' s why the sect ignored it?!

No doubt, this is Sabeth' s best stuff including remixed versions of the "zwei" 7" songs. I really love the production which is very clean and not that bass glutted things you get normally while listening to this sound. And while a band like Zorn and later The Men Of Hell wrote overdrawn pathetic - although they were a bit poking fun at themselves - lyrics, those by Sabeth really approached me.

How could I forget... the resolving, drifty part in "caprice"... great. Even the new version of "ein versuch" is fine. Enjoy and get your hands on this record. Quick!

SABETH - zwei (7") Join The Team Player Records #02 1998

Okay, here is the second Sabeth 7" which was the second release (first one was the 51 compilation lp, which is also worth a posting) from the small - back then - Join The Team Player label. The label is now defunct and the people involved are concentrating on tour booking. Together with Trans Solar they were the first to introduce a higher quality layout comparable to established US labels for their releases. The cover here is no exception if you think of Second Nature/ Edision, Initial, Doghouse etc. and compare it to what German labels were considering artwork (just think of some labels from Berlin or the Hannover area).

Really a good development within a short time from their first 7" to this one. Quite more moshy but not the generic and boring chuggachugga thing and a way more precise drumming. Does anyone remember Mine from Switzerland and Constance? The also had this total unique sound: mosh without being mosh and unpredictable and great changes within the songs.

Especially the lyrics here are taking a great new direction: a quite deep, less naive analysis and of course stricture of structures, behaviour etc. within the hardcore scene but also keeping associated mechanisms of projection while doing so in mind (I' ve been told that this is also a reason that led to the end of Sabeth). That was the moment when I really started to love Sabeth and I know that some people in the Stuttgart area weren' t very pleased with their lyrics which just makes me smile and say: yes!

Although the label doesn' t exist anymore in contrast to the first 7" you might find this one in mailorder lists, at Ebay or even record stores. Just try your luck.

SABETH - 1st (7") diy 1996/ 1997

The last few weeks I got some e-mails how about me posting some German bands from the last decade since over the oceans people mainly just know the whole Bremen stuff, the Common Cause roster (this blog needs some Abc Diabolo & Ambush postings!) or Love Records things, since they were distributed quite well. Then I started pulling out singles, then I thought about having a series with 90ies emo stuff from all over the world (that' s how the Rights Reserved and The Trigger Quintet ended up here) and in the end about 200 singles were in front of my shelf giving this blog a new direction for the next weeks since there are many Reagan era, KBD whatever blogs or even faceless downloading blogs (horrible institutions) out there and only a few who constantly are posting things from the last decade which is a pity. I mean: fuck pomo and the standard dictum "it was all done before", I grew up with this shit, Seeing Zorn and Abc Diabolo live way before I owned a +Void+ split lp or even This Heat, Can, Terry Riley, Ornette Coleman or insert anything (hey dickheads even Teddie was thinking about his childhood and youth every fraggin minute... hahahahaha) so why should I lie: my heart is still into this crap.

I went through the singles again and stopped with: Sabeth! A band from the southern Stuttgart area featuring a former Dawnbreed (also coming!) member, having fine lyrics and just existing for about three years. They were also a great and powerful live band and I still have some soundboard recordings I' d like to "release" as tape (side note: Antithesis released many live tapes in the 90ies), so if anyone knows where the members are nowadays: please contact me. Maybe I will add one show soon.

I will post their stuff chronically starting with their first 7" now which came in a nice, self done packaging with high gloss cards of paintings and lyrics on the back (does anyone remember those funny Dawnbreed autograph cards in the Flatline fanzine?). In the US the whole heavy music thing (we degenerated Germans refer to this as "heavy mucke") was just emerging out of hardcore - think about Kiss It Goodbye, Bloodlet, Coalesce, Deadguy and so on - while bands like Sabeth managed to find their own sound, very unique but with a huge influence of emo core (it' s funny how unbiased I am while writing this word today), Bremen (Acme/Carol/Systral...), Helmet, AmRep and Touch & Go artists parallel to this development - at least those things come to my mind while listening to them. This was also the first time besides Dawnbreed I thought that German lyrics might not sound awkward since there were more than 15 years of embarrassment between Fehlfarben, Mittagspause, DAF, S.Y.P.H. (hell yeah!), Die Tödliche Doris, Palais Schaumburg (da bomb yo!), der Plan etc. and what is called "Hamburger Schule" or - like Sabeth - hardcore bands from Bremen or Southern Germany (did someone in the back scream "what about some Deutschpunk?"?; dude, come here and get some!).

By the way: all those bands pay tribute to Bernhard Hahn (Elch Studio) who produced all those records back then giving them this particular sound. Like Kuschelrockstudios did in Northern Germany helped to define the Teutonic sound (hahahahaha) of Acme, Carol etc..

RIGHTS RESERVED - galleons lap (7") La Cocina Records #01 199?

Most just know Rights Reserved from their split 7" with Assfactor 4 or maybe their lp on Assorted Porkchorps, which is really great. I am really jealous about my sister having it and me never buying it (I hadn' t to since we were living together for a long time able to listen to each other' s records).

What most people do not know is that this Durham based band started as a melodic hardcore punk band in the late 80ies having eps that are way different than their early 90ies sound which more or less touched the emo genre and so I thought it might be nice to post a 7" by them that is quite between their early stuff and their lp and shows somehow this development even within songs.

Yeah I am sorry but they are really doing a cover of "young turks". Due to this it will just be up for one week. I am a bit paranoid.

I couldn' t find any informations on the world wide web; but I will post other things by them including the lp.

BLOODSPORT - "Massmurder on every scale" demo (CD-R) Repel Records 1998

This is my first Repel Records posting, a small label and fanzine from the Ruhrpott area done by the second and notorious singer of Spawn and later True Blue (very much loved by the political correct ones.... hahahaha). He is currently doing Reaper Records. Anyway Repel was releasing some fine demos in the last century and I am starting with this one since I just pulled it out for a friend; all other demos I own will follow: True Blue, Damage i.d., Buried Alive and the great Iron Skull. I am still missing some stuff which is supposed to be on Repel: Despair live tape, a compilation tape called "return to heaven" and a Born From Pain demo. Maybe someone can help me out or will even contribute them here.

Back to Bloodsport: I think, they started with a drum computer like Rancor did, but added the former Invidia drummer soon (I have their demo tape but I am missing the cover; anyone?) to record this demo. Beside Invidia the band members used to be in Feeding The Fire (maybe the most famous red edge band beside Profound/ ManLiftingBanner), Backdraft, Rancor (I found a homepage... they are back together?!) and Invidia.
We played with them some gigs as a replacement for Brother' s Justice who got robbed and lost nearly all their equipment and merchandise on tour - that was together with Length Of Time. Bloodsport were what you might call a live band. I don' t know how their later album for GSR was, but the demo is just a bit behind their brutal live performance: what the audience was doing while watching Length Of Time was done by Bloodsport on stage before.

What I loved about Bloodsport around this time was that they orientated themselves way more towards the originally 8oies metal bands than most of the bands from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany were doing back then ( maybe besides Liar): less moshcore more metal. Just listen to "sauron". I really love the dry drum sound; not like all those overproduced things nowadays.

The demo was later rereleased as tape by Spill The Blood records (S.T.B. #05), which is the most known version and you might often find it in trade lists etc. This is the cover (I included the whole scan in the zip file):



As you might know: some members went on to play in Born From Pain. But this is a different story.

BIRTHRIGHT shirt

Original Birthright shirt from Catalyst records. One of the most well known 90ies vegan drugfree chugga chugga bands with former members of Jackhammer and Advance I think (both with singles and tapes on Initial and Catalyst). Especially in Germany the band name is misinterpreted due to the background of a vegan drugfree ideology.
I read on the Catalyst homepage once that Birthright wasn' t a full vegan straight edge band either since having constant line up changes etc. and not all members lived up to that; there were only a few bands with all members being vegan drugfree anyway.
Like most ot the vegan drugfree bands they just had few outputs or a few songs on many different records twice etc. (songs from the demos are on the 7", split 7" and MCD etc. and everything on a CD now). A constant phenomenom since many heroes of that area even just did one 7".

THE TRIGGER QUINTET - self titled (7") Twistworthy Records #01 1995

I am not quite sure if someone remembers (at least Used Bin Forever! does) this very, very short lived Texas based band - I think they just existed for one year or so and had only a few outputs (one 7" and two compilation tracks).
If you grew up with all those early 90ies emo core bands who were also influenced by guitar rock you will like The Trigger Quintet. Well played, good and clear production and the typical nice packaging for this time - what else do you want?

So wherever Tim, Brian, Mike and Mark are nowadays: thank you for this nice piece of plastic.

I have a brand new soundcard and can provide much better rips now; currently I am reripping all vinyl stuff that has been posted before (tapes have been done at the computer of my convenant and should sound fine - or?).

I just realized how awful for example the C.C.M. lp sounded - I am really sorry.

By the way: never purchase a motherboard with Via chipset. The worst case scenario would be: Asus motherboard, Via chipset and Nvidia graphic card. Argh....

(UNION OF) URANUS - backhand (Tape) Daybreak Records 1994

These songs are also on the split 12" with His Hero Is Gone (became something like a neo crust and emo scum wet collectors dream) and again on something like a discography cd (which no one needs (?) because it just features the songs from the split 7", the 2x7"/12" and the demo (which means those lazy bastards didn' t record more songs?)). I just thought it might be a nice posting including scans of the tape cover. Union of Uranus, Uranus or (Union of) Uranus were an ignition for a whole wave of bands especially in Germany and France many bands originated who were mainly or directly influenced by them (Uranus nearly had the same impact like bands like Unbroken, Born Against or His Hero Is Gone/ Tragedy/ Remains Of The Day had concerning waves of new bands). The demo is still a bit behind the great 2x7" but a damn good offbeat by a new band. Released on Daybreak back then which is one of the many names of the label most of you know as Great American Steak Religion or Feral Ward or Witch Hunt. One band member went on to play in His Hero Is Gone and Tragedy as you might know.
